“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yield its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”
Aging can often be a difficult process where some feel they are no longer valued or have anything to contribute. Growing old is not for sissies as it requires fortitude, determination, focus, and an inner attitude where one seeks meaning and purpose in ways perhaps they were not able in their youth.
Aging causes us to reflect in redefining of whom we are and whose we are and what lasting remnant one desires to leave in this world.
In every season of our lives we can continue to be fruitful if we follow God’s antiaging prescription. Psalm 1 says if we delight ourselves in the Lord and meditate on His word, we will be like a tree planted by the water.
This picture evokes a powerful image as I envision what a tree looks like living near the water. Age does not diminish the capability of the Lord’s life living in us and what He can do as we delight ourselves in Him, for He increases our value, just as He does to this tree, whose roots digs deep into the reservoir of the living waters that continually flow.
The value we have as seasoned persons is the wisdom we have gained through the years of lived experiences, in the suffering through the many challenges life has brought our way, and it is this Godly wisdom that redeems our time, where we can mentor, helping those in our path, giving back from the wealth of gaining an inner life where meaning and purpose has been instilled through our own spiritual character development.
A tree’s branches are strong and do not waver; its leaves flourish, offering shade; its fruit is plentiful and arrives in a timely fashion.
No matter our age or what season we are living in our lives at this moment, our lives – like this tree – will remain bearing fruit and will bring meaning when our roots stay planted in the Lord, who is our living water, refreshing us in a continual fashion, flowing through our veins, coursing in our blood, causing sustenance, as He who is our source, reigns within our hearts.
We will bear fruit in every season of our lives, our hearts will not faint nor will we fall away, for it is the Lord who holds us in His hands, it is His strength that sours through all of whom we are becoming, spawning a life lived in intentionally purposed means, remaining fruit bearers through all we endure in this life.
We realize it is our Father God, who alone is the giver and sustainer of our lives. May the roots of our hearts be firmly planted in His life-giving Word, as He daily renews us by His Living Spirit, who breathes life into our mortal bodies.
Our Lord is our refuge providing shade, just as a tree whose branches have grown, bearing lush leaves provides shade from the sun’s beating heat, where we find solace sitting beneath its cool breeze, we find our comfort in Him as He fashions us into His image.
As we gaze into His face, it is His light that shines upon us, it is His Love that draws us nearer to Him, it is His Mercy reached towards us, where we live gratefully, under the shadow of His wing, drawing from the deep cool streams that provide vision, that give direction, that uplift us in our times of need.
The seasons of our lives are given to us by our Lord and it is He who spreads His leaves of protection over us. It our Lord who brings strength coursing through our bodies through the Living Waters of His Holiness.
It is our Lord who becomes the reason we rise each day. It is our Lord who bears fruit within us as we give of ourselves to His Will in each moment gifted to us.
So, let us dig deeply into these flowing streams of life, offered to us by our Lord, and drink from His sustaining Grace, who abides in us, an ever steady strength in all our moments, remembering there are no wasted years, and the value we have is in becoming a people who walk in the counsel of the Godly.
Our lives that we have spent in surrendering our hearts towards pursuing His Holiness, become fragrant blossoms of the fruits of the Spirit that flow, in increasing measures as we age into wise sages.
